Mathematics Education and Working Life Relevance in East-Africa

The purpose of this Project is to strengthen HEIs in East-Africa as developmentally responsive institutions by enhancing curriculum development, pedagogical approach and capacity of staff in the area of mathematics education and teacher preparation. The invigoration and modernisation of teacher training and the upgrading of curricula will increase the level and enrolment of mathematics education, give a push forward to the education of mathematics teachers  and support the universities ability to embark on development projects with the surrounding society, industry and public governance.

These goals will be achieved through institutional cooperation between the HEIs in Finland and partner developing countries in selected result areas. The Finnish partners represent unique assets for these objectives.  LUT ja TUT belong to a European Network of Universities (ECMI, www.ecmi-indmath.org) who have since 1990 developed a model MS Programme “Mathematics in Industry”. Our Project represents this experience on building working life relevance on mathematics education and pedagogy of applied mathematics. Directions of mathematics applications in Partner HEIs are specified with respect to local industrial and research demand which varies across the countries. University of Oulu has established collaboration with Bahir Dar Ethiopia in building knowledge base and education in computational atmospheric science.
