Proposals for modelling tasks are welcome

European Study Group with Industry is a week-long workshop where applied mathematicians work together with industrialists on R&D questions arising from industry or other organizations.

An interested company may suggest a problem or research question to the workshop. An industry representative will be asked to present the problem on the first day. A team of mathematicians and experts of computational methods will tackle the problem for the consecutive 4 days. Results are presented on the last day.

Oxford Study Group with Industry concept was pioneered at University of Oxford in 1960's. Later renamed as European Study Groups with Industry, ESGI has become a successful model worldwide. See http://miis.maths.ox.ac.uk/

ESGI 89 will be organised in collaboration with Lappeenranta University of Technology and St Petersburg State Polytechnic University.

For academia the ESGI workshop aims to

  • foster contacts and collaboration between academia and industry
  • identify research questions and topics for graduate students

The workshop provides for companies

  • fresh ideas and analyses of the problem
  • consultation and brainstorming on available modeling, simulation and computational methods
  • identification of topics for further research collaboration
  • contacts to young researchers and PhD students
  • in some cased explicit solutions, often useful partial answers and insight
  • allow companies to evaluate students for future employment
